Relief for the Tarahumara Indians in Mexico
Once the longest-lived people in the world, the Tarahumara Indian's life expectancy dropped from one hundred years to just fifty years in only a few short decades. Determined to help, Gary Young began organizing a relief effort to bring resources to the Tarahumara people.
After months of planning and fundraising, and thanks to many generous donations, The D. Gary Young Foundation raised thousands for the Tarahumara people. In 2003, foundation volunteers traveled to Mexico to deliver food and supplies, and began building a new elementary school. After seven days of working hand-in-hand with the Tarahumara people, the foundation's goal of bringing relief to this community was realized.
The Cinterandes Foundation Mobile Surgery Unit
The Cinterandes Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the availability of medical care to those in remote and impoverished areas. Staffed by highly trained physicians, the foundation works hand-in-hand with rural doctors to identify patients in need. Once a patient is thoroughly evaluated, an anesthesiologist and surgeon from the Cinterandes Foundation travel to the patient's village in a fully equipped mobile surgical unit.
In the eleven years that the Cinterandes Foundation has been up and running, it has performed more than 5,000 surgeries. Its low complication rate and availability for follow-up gives people in remote areas access to top-quality medical treatment that was previously unavailable.
In 2006, Gary Young assisted in the Cinterandes mobile surgical unit. Moved by the work the Cinterandes Foundation does to bring medical care to those who need it most, Gary used The D. Gary Young Foundation to donate money, labor, and supplies.
